The White Flag Campaign is a proactive, community-driven initiative aimed at preventing and reducing violence against women and children in South Africa. At its core, the campaign represents a visible and symbolic commitment to safety, accountability, and collective responsibility. The “white flag” serves as a powerful emblem—signifying peace, protection, and a shared pledge to stand against all forms of gender-based violence.
The overarching objective of the campaign is to reduce violent crimes against women and children by 10% over a five-year period. To achieve this, the campaign focuses not only on awareness, but also on practical action, behavioural change, and sustained community involvement, promoting a culture of prevention rather than reaction.
A key pillar of the campaign is empowering women to take personal responsibility for their safety, while also supporting and protecting other women and vulnerable children. Central to this empowerment is financial agency—equipping women with the knowledge, resources, and opportunities to achieve economic independence. Financial security reduces vulnerability, enables informed decision-making, and provides women with the means to leave unsafe environments and build safer futures.
The campaign also seeks to foster a paradigm shift in how South Africans perceive and respond to gender-based violence, recognising its deep and long-term impact on individuals, families, and society. By reshaping attitudes and challenging harmful norms, the initiative works to break cycles of abuse and promote a culture of respect and accountability.
Finally, the White Flag Campaign mobilises communities—including traditional leaders—to take an active and sustained role in eliminating all forms of violence. Through collective action and shared responsibility, it aims to create safer, more resilient communities where women and children can live free from fear.
